17th century

  • 1616The Dutch establish their colony of Essequibo, in the region of the Essequibo River, in northern South America (modern-day Guyana), for sugar and tobacco production. The colony is protected by Fort Kyk-Over-Al. The Dutch also map the Delaware River in North America.source

  • 1714October 24 – Four Dutch investors, led by brothers Nicolaas and Hendrik van Hoorn, purchase the South American colony of Berbice from French mercenary Jacques Cassard, who had captured the colony from the Van Peere family. A century later, in 1815, the land is ceded to Great Britain and later merged with neighboring colonies to form what is now Guyana.source
