10th century

  • 917The Hungarians, after attacking Swabia, sack and burn Basel (modern Switzerland). They invade Lorraine in Lotharingia, destroying Verdun and Moyenmoutier, and many monasteries in Alsace. Duke Arnulf I (the Bad) with Hungarian military aid, reconquers his land from King Conrad I of the East Frankish Kingdom. After this event, Bavaria and Swabia agree to pay tribute to the Hungarians.source

  • 1376February 26 – The Böse Fasnacht, a riot in the Swiss city of Basel, breaks out during a tournament at a carnival and numerous people are killed, including several of the soldiers of the Duke of Austria, Leopold III. The city council arrests and executes 12 perpetrators, but Duke Leopold proceeds with placing the city under stricter control.source

As Felix V, he is designated in Vatican history as the last "antipope". He remains in Basel and never travels to Rome to assume the papacy; in 1449, after the death of Eugene IV, Amadeus assumes an oath of loyalty to Eugene's successor, Pope Nicholas V.source
